The Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport combines the Corvette's LS3-based powertrain with unique, wide-body styling and a racing-bred suspension for a distinctive model that delivers a great balance of road and race track performance. It is offered in both coupe and convertible body styles, with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The LS3 6.2L engine is rated at 430 horsepower (321 kW) and 424 lb.-ft. of torque (575 Nm) with the standard exhaust system. An optional two-mode exhaust system elevates the power ratings to 436 horses (325 kW) and 428 lb.-ft. (580 Nm).

The Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport replaces the previous Corvette's Z51 package, and brings a greater degree of handling performance, with wider wheels and tires; revised shock, stabilizer bars and spring specifications; and specific gearing. The equipment enables cornering capability of 1.0 g, as well as a 0.2-second improvement in 0-60 acceleration vs. standard LS3-powered models.

Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport coupe models equipped with the manual transmission are Uniquely outfitted for race track competition, too, with a dry-sump oiling system, differential cooler and a rear-mounted battery.

Also, the paddle-shift six-speed automatic transmission is offered, while a manual transmission is the only choice with the Z06.

All of the Corvette's exterior colors are offered on the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport, Heritage and an available package adds front iconic Fender hash marks offered in four colors, as well as two-tone seats with the Grand Sport embroidery. Grand Sport history

Envisioned by legendary Corvette engineer ZoRa Arkus-Duntov as a factory-built, lightweight and race-ready production model that would trump domestic and foreign road-racing competitors, the original Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport was a promising idea that led to the production of five special prototypes in 1963. The project was later shelved, following GM's agreement to stay out of manufacturer-backed motorsports.

The five prototypes were based on the styling of the Corvette in 1963 and were hand-assembled under Duntov's watchful eye. But while they looked like production models, the prototypes were purpose-built race cars that shared little with their assembly-line cousins. Duntov also oversaw the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport engine program that featured a special, 377-cubic-inch small-block V-8 with side-draft carburetors.

Although never officially sanctioned by General Motors, the five Grand Sport racing prototypes saw extensive experience throughout the 1960s in the hands of "private" racers who had strong contacts within Duntov's engineering circle. All five original cars are accounted for today and are among the most valuable in the collector market.

Chevrolet offered a limited-edition production model in 1996, commemorating the original racing cars and marking the end of the era in Corvette C4 production. 1.000 All of the examples were painted Blue Admiral and featured a white center stripe and red "hash mark" graphics on the front left Fender, a graphic scheme that mimicked the look of some of the original race cars.

During this transition, Corvette Racing will test and develop the next-generation C6.R race cars in anticipation of a unified GT class in 2010.

GM has announced today that the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport will be Returning for the 2010 model year (that's if GM is still around, and product plans do not end up changing under another owner). The 2010 Chevrolet Grand Sport will carry a LS3 under the hood and will feature wide-body styling along with a racing-bred suspension.

The 6.2L V8 will make a total of 430-hp with a maximum torque of 424 lb-ft with a standard exhaust system. Buyers can opt for the optional two-mode exhaust system that increases output to 436-hp with a peak torque of 428 lb-ft. The engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual or an optional 6-speed automatic.

Today, Chevrolet revealed the long awaited Corvette ZR1 online, prior to its public debut that will take place at the 2008 Detroit Show in January. When ZR1 arrives next summer, the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will be the most powerful and fastest production car ever produced by General Motors, with performance enabled by a new, supercharged 6.2L LS9 small-block V-8 engine. LS9 V-8 engine is Targeted at producing at least 100 horsepower per liter, or 620 horsepower (462 kW), and approximately 595 lb.-ft. of torque (823 Nm)

GM Powertrain testing shows the engine makes approximately 300 horsepower (224 kW) at 3.000 rpm and nearly 320 lb.-ft. of torque (434 Nm) at only 1.000 rpm. Torque tops 585 lb.-ft. (793 Nm) at about the 4.000-rpm mark, while horsepower Peaks at 6.500 rpm. The engine produces 90 percent of peak torque from 2.600 to 6.000 rpm rpm.

In order to celebrate the entry of the Corvette C6.R into the GT1 class of the ALMS this year, GM unveiled the day to 2009 Chevrolet Corvette GT1 Championship Edition, a new package available for the Corvette coupe 4LT, Z06 convertible 4LT and 3LZ.

The package will be available in a yellow base color with black accents, or with a black base paint and yellow accents. Yellow cars will receive black headlights with body colored door handles and a unique carbon fiber engine cover for both models. The Corvette Racing team's' Jake 'logo will be used throughout the car, and the team's Victories will be displayed on the lower portion of the Corvette's door.
